[ Summary ] Risk factors for colorectal cancer (CRC) are listed and explained based on international reviews written on this topic. Evaluation of risk factors specific to Japanese populations are also summarized. Alcohol consumption is a well-known established risk factor for CRC. On the other hand, cigarette smoking, which increases the risk of several chronic diseases, was recently observed to be a risk factor for CRC also. In the future, red meat or processed meat consumption, excess weight, and obesity may also become more important risk factors for the Japanese population. In terms of CRC prevention, it may be important to take into consideration all these factors.
