| [ Summary ] | Inflammatory polyps may be solitary or multiple growths which develop secondary to inflammation. By contrast, colonic muco-submucosal elongated polyps (CMSEPs) arise from mucosa in which no inflammation is observed in the background mucosa. They are long, slender polyps whose surface is covered by normal mucosa. Both types of polyps are non-epithelial tumors which exhibit similar morphology. However, it appears possible to differentiate between the types because of differences in patient history, differences in the background mucosa as indicated by endoscopic findings, difference in inflammatory cell infiltration seen in the background mucosa, the presence of cases in which no submucosa is observed, or other conditions. | |
