[ Summary ] A group of serrated polyps in the colorectum may be characterized histologically by serrated architecture, and may include hyperplastic polyps, serrated adenomas, and sessile serrated adenomas (SSA). Serrated adenomas demonstrate serrated crypt architecture, similar to hyperplastic polyps. They may also exhibit neoplastic cytologic and architectural atypia. SSAs were previously considered to be large variant lesions associated with hyperplastic polyps and characterized by abnormal proliferation, as well as architectural distortion. Serrated polyps are thought to be precursor lesions for sporadic microsatellite unstable carcinoma developing via serrated neoplasia pathways.
