| [ Summary ] | Recently, advances in endoscopic modalities and treatment devices such as the narrow band imaging and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) have made early detection and treatment of superficial esophageal cancer. In addition to advances in optical endoscopy, ESD is widely accepted as a useful treatment for superficial esophageal carcinoma within the epithelium or the lamina propia because ESD samples can provide adequate tumor-free margins. On the other hand, superficial esophageal cancer which is beyond the limits of endoscopic treatment have been treated surgically, which as been the standard treatment. However definitive chemoradiatiotherapy has recently been adapted for those types of cancer because squamous cell carcinoma has a greater sensitivity to radiation and anticancer agents. In the future, we must strengthen the links between physicians, endoscopists, surgeons and therapeutic radiologists to achieve better outcomes for patients with early esophageal cancer. |
