[ Summary ] A study examining the usefulness of magnifying endoscopy for diagnosing gastric cancer from the viewpoint of screening and decision making before ESD is reported on. For screening endoscopic examinations, magnifying endoscopy could be used to diagnose gastric cancer with a sensitivity of 86% and specificity of 85% for lesions which conventional endoscopy could not be employed to diagnose. In relation to decisions on the extent of gastric cancer before ESD, the extent of 53 lesions could not be determined with conventional endoscopy. However, 44 out of 53 could be determined with magnifying endoscopy. From these results, magnifying endoscopy was considered be useful for diagnosing gastric cancer.
