[ Summary ] Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are KIT-positive mesenchymal tumors originating in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract. To facilitate optimal diagnosis and treatment of GISTs in Japan, the Japanese clinical practice guidelines for GISTs, based on the NCCN and ESMO guidelines, were proposed in March 2008. Subsequent development and establishment of new diagnostic and therapeutic methods led to revisions of the guidelines. Because GISTs are rare and only scant evidences has been established, the clinical practice guidelines for GISTs are "evidence-based consensus guidelines". We have been conducting research to establish more practical risk classifications, precise strategies for clinical and pathological diagnosis, as well as effective multimodal treatment.
