[ Summary ] Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) exhibit positive reactions to KIT or CD34. This type ofimmunohistochemical examination is essential to making a final diagnosis of these tumors. Tumor tissue can not be acquired with conventional endoscopic forceps because GISTs are covered with normal mucosa. We are able to obtain tumor tissue from small SMT using endoscopic ultrasound guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA). Two of 16 GISTs increased in size over extended follow-up periods. The number of large GISTs is smaller than the number ofminute GISTs, which are incidentally found in microscopical or endoscopical examination. We suspect that some GISTs increase in size, but others remain unenlarged over long periods.
