[ Summary ] Tumor stage and the degree of liver damage should be considered when selecting a therapeutic choice for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Appropriate choice requires highly specific knowledge and experience. In order to simplify treatment strategies for HCC, the "Clinical Practice Guidelines for Hepatocellular Carcinoma" (Japanese HCC Guidelines) have been compiled by an expert panel supported by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. For users' convenience, a practical algorithm for the treatment of HCC was created. In this article, we outlined the algorithm, compared it to the other therapeutic algorithms for HCC and referred to the latest version of the guidelines published in 2009.
