[ Summary ] According to a nation-wide survey by the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES), the incidence of colonoscopic complications was 0.07% between 1998-2002. The majority were due to perforations. The major location of perforations is the sigmoid colon. In these cases some patients died. The etiology of perforations during colonoscopies was due to mechanical devices, Most of these cases were managed with surgical rescue. Careful performance of colonoscopy is required to prevent perforations.
