[ Summary ] Recently, large-diameter balloons have been used for papillary dilation after endoscopic sphincterotomy (ES). This is done for treatment of patients with bile duct stones which could not be extracted by employing ES and a dormia basket or a retrieval balloon. Most studies to date have reported that this method is an effective and safe treatment for patients with large bile duct stones. In addition, this modality appears to decrease procedure times, fluoroscopy times and reduce the need for mechanical lithotripsy. Further evaluation and standardization of this procedure are required.
