[ Summary ] In United States, the "National Polyp Study…" was conducted in the 1980s. The study centered on colonoscopic surveillance after polypectomies. Evidence-based guidelines were proposed in 2006, based on polyp number, size, and grade of dysplasia. In Japan, a randomized controlled trial is now being conducted, and the final results of this study will be obtained within a few years. In relation to surveillance after colorectal cancer resection, scientific evidence is still lacking. In addition, randomized controlled trials are now being conducted in Europe. Although an example of a surveillance protocol has been proposed by the Japanese Society for Cancer of the Colon and Rectum, we should keep in mind that it is not currently based on high-quality evidence.
