[ Summary ] Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is characterized by intraductal papillary growth of mucinous epithelia. It often affects the head of the pancreas in elderly patients. The affected pancreatic duct and/or ductules are dilated with excessive mucin produced by IPMN and/or growth of atypical epithelia. Involvement ranges from adenoma (IPMA), to non-invasive or invasive carcinoma (IPMC). Further involvement of invasive ductal carcinoma develops from IPMN. The clinical courses of patients with IPMN, even with IPMC, are more favorable than for normal invasive ductal carcinoma. Synchronous and/or metachronous invasive ductal carcinoma is frequently seen in the pancreas without IPMN. Extrapancreatic malignant neoplasms are observed in patients with IPMN. These two factors have recently been reported on and have received attention from many clinicians.
