[ Summary ] Visceral hypersensitivity is the most important aspect of the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Barostat testing was developed to study visceral perception in functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID). However, it is essential not only to understand the fundamental mechanisms of Barostat testing but also to master the vital techniques of this modality to obtain reliable data from IBS patients. Therefore, the important aspects of Barostat testing are discussed in detail along with comments on its clinical implications.
