[ Summary ] Metabolic bone diseases are found in 50% of postgastrectomy patients by evaluating bone mineral contents with microdensimetry or dual X-ray absorptiometry. This disease is more frequent after total gastrectomies, Billroth II or Roux-en-Y anastomosis in which food does not pass through the duodenum. Bone disorders become more serious after extended postoperative periods. These conditions are more prominent in women. They may be caused by a decreased intake and absorption of calcium and by secondary hyperparathyroidism. These conditions are also affected by aging. We should recognize the condition of patients with this disorder. It is also important to prevent this disorder at early postoperative stages, and to formulate precise diagnoses and provide adequate treatment.
