[ Summary ] At this time, videoendoscopes are primarily used for routine endoscopic examinations and therapies in Japan. These instruments are equipped with various kinds of color enhancement and structural enhancement systems in order to easily observe lesions and determine the their borders. However, side-viewing-type videoendoscopes for use in the duodenum have not been equipped with the high quality CCDs, which are comparable to those in forward-viewing videoendoscopes. Duodenal chromoendoscopy, is especially useful when employing the indigocarimine contrast method, for observing minute mucosal surface lesions. Structural differences between lesions may also be observed with this technology. However, precise conventional video-endoscopic observation is still necessary for correct diagnosis and treatment.
