[ Summary ] |
SAFE-3000 is a videoendoscopy-based autofluorescence (AF) system containing a full color charge coupled device. Two light sources are available in the SAFE-3000 ; a xenon lamp for white light (WL) images and a 408 nm diode laser that works as an AF mode excitation light source. It also allows for dual real time imaging (TWIN mode) in which both WL and AF images are displayed simultaneously, facilitating their comparison. Most early gastric cancers (EGC) can be detected with this system. The tumor extent in AF images was correctly diagnosed in most intestinal-type EGC lesions, but was diagnosed in less than half of diffuse-type EGC lesions. Pink or orange colors in AF images was detected in half of protruded intestinal-type EGCs lesions. The detection of orange or pink colors in AF images may be efficacious in discriminating gastric adenomas from protruded intestinal-type early gastric cancers. At the present time, the level of illumination from AF images from the SAFE-3000 system is not adequate for screening endoscopy of the stomach. It also has low specificity because benign erosions or ulcers may be indicated as pseudopositive. It is hoped that the SAFF-3000 system will be improved in the near future. |
