[ Summary ] This review is in relation to the narrow-band imaging (NBI) system which has been developed by the National Cancer Center Hospital East, Japan. The technology for the NBI system is based on modifying spectral features by narrowing the bandwidth of spectral transmittance using various optical filters. The NBI system consists of two filters in the 415-30 nm and 540-30 nm band ranges, which are used for observing fine capillaries in the superficial mucosa. This is essential to identify gastrointestinal neoplasms. To estimate the feasibility and efficacy of using the NBI system for surveillance or screening examinations, randomized control trials should be conducted.
