| [ Summary ] | We herein review the literature concerning the usefulness of intraductal ultrasonography (IDUS) for pancreatic diseases. IDUS is useful for evaluating the horizontal spread along the main pancreatic duct in cases of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas, thus providing valuable information for the determination of the resection line during surgery. Differentiation between benign and malignant IPMNs is also indispensable for making management decisions. Measurement of the height of mural nodules by IDUS is expected to be useful for differential diagnosis of IPMN. Since IDUS cannot always demonstrate whole lesions, especially in branch duct IPMN, endoscopic ultrasonography plays a complementary role in such cases. Differential diagnosis between benign and malignant strictures of the main pancreatic duct by IDUS has not been established. | |
