[ Summary ] Crohn's disease should be treated to improve patients' QOL through various modalities including surgery. The indications for surgery are intestinal strictures, fistula and other conditions. Intestinal cancer, which is thought to be a high risk condition for patients with Crohn's disease, should be carefully looked for to detect early cancer. Patients with enteroenteral fistula require surgery before extensive bowel resection becomes necessary because of possible involvement with normal intestinal tissue. Surgical procedures to treat diseased intestines include limited resection, strictureplasty, seton treatment, as well as fecal diversion (including abdominoperineal resection) are alternatives for treatment of complicated anorectal diseases. Prophylactic treatment to prevent postoperative recurrence should be considered as indicated through evidence based studies.
