[ Summary ] Intravenous cyclosporine therapy (IV CsA) has been proven to be highly effective at inducing remission in patients with severe intractable ulcerative colitis (UC) who have had total-colectomies in spite of administration of high dosages of steroids.
Furthermore, it seems to be important to initiate administration of IV CsA to patients with severe intractable UC as soon as possible, to achieve more efficacious results and improvements in QOL. This is accomplished by predicting refraction to steroids using the clinical activity index and colonoscopic finding.
