| [ Summary ] | Many splenectomies have been performed based on hematological indications such as pathological diagnosis of malignant lymphoma, steroid refractory idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura for improvement of platelet count, and hereditary spherocytosis to improve anemia, as well as others. Recently, laparoscopic splenectomy has been preferred because of lower morbidity rates and shorter hospital stays, compared to open splenectomies. Postsplenectomy complications include thrombosis and the overwhelming posrsplenectomy infection (OPSI). To prevent thrombosis, antithrombotic therapy is necessary for patients with high platelet counts even preoperatively. Moreover, to prevent OPSI, adequate vaccines for Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophiliaus influenzae are necessary before splenectomies. | |
