[ Summary ] |
Cholecystectomy, particularly the laparoscopic variety, is the treatment of choice for cholecystolithiasis. Oral bile acid therapy, with or without ESWL, may be indicated for selected patients. Cholecystolithiasis with typical biliary symptoms or biliary complications, including acute cholecystitis and acute pancreatitis, should be treated. Asymptomatic cholecystolithiasis is not thought to require treatment. On the other hand common bile duct stones are treated with endoscopy (sphincterotomy or papillary balloon dilation) as well as surgery (open or laparoscopic choledocholithotomy). However, a standard treatment strategy has not yet been established. Choledocholithiasis, even though asymptomatic, may often cause future symptoms (abdominal pain and jaundice), as well as severe complications (acute cholangitis). Therefore, the majority of choledocholithiasis cases should be treated. |
