[ Summary ] Laparoscopic antireflux surgery (LARS) has gained wide acceptance among surgeons as a treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). LARS is a minimally invasive surgery and produces a 90 % suppression of reflux. Its indications are (1) poor PPI responders, (2) severe esophagitis, (3) severe reflux symptoms, (4) respiratory symptoms related to GERD, (5) large hiatal hernias, (6) young patients receiving maintenance treatment, and (7) Barrett's esophagus. LARS is also effective and produces satisfactory results for patients with nonerosive GERD, who are properly selected.
