| [ Summary ] | Esophageal achalasia is a primary motility disorder of the esophagus. The main clinicopathologic feature is an abnormality of the lower esophageal sphincter, which does not relax properly during swallowing. Surgical myotomy is often considered in patients with recurrent symptoms of achalasia after pneumatic dilatation. Laparoscopic esophageal myotomy with fundoplication seems to be a safe and durable approach for the treatment of achalasia. Laparoscopic esophageal myotomy and fundoplication, performed by skilled practitioners may become the first choice for achalasia treatment in the near future. | |
