[ Summary ] In Japan, gastric cancer is one of the most frequent, serious cancerous disease and its early detection is important. We have several diagnostic methods to discover gastric cancer in the field of mass screening ; barium meal studies, endoscopy, the PG method, assays of Hp antibody levels, and others.
In the field of gastroenterology, the diagnostic capabilities of endoscopy for gastric cancer are widely recognized. Indeed, endoscopy can be used to discover gastric cancer in the early stages, which can be treated with endoscopic surgery (EMR and / or ESD). However, the conventional insertion mode (orally) is sometimes hazardous to patients, because of irritation of the gastropharyngeal nerve. Vomiting during scope insertion is troublesome for patients.
Recently, in relation to developments in thin-caliber gastroduodenoscopes, trans-nasal insertion methods have been widely utilized in health checks and / or GI clinics. Using transnasal endoscopy, vomiting was significantly reduced and hazards to patients during examination were greatly reduced. Therefore, the introduction of transnasal eadoscopy to the field of gastric cancer screening is expected provide a reliabele screenig method.
