[ Summary ] Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths and the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. With proper screening for early detection of colon cancers and removal of precancerous polyps, this disease is preventable. However, many of eligible men and women are not being screened. We review the current screening recommendations, modalities and practices for average risk patients in the U.S. and issues that unfortunately still remain a barrier to effective screening in this population of patients.
