[ Summary ] Recent advances in CT technology are beginning to allow for the evaluation of colonic cancer and polyps through CT colonography (CTC). It has become a reality for CTC imaging to be used for screening examinations of the colon. At present, polyps measuring greater than 10 mm in diameter may be detected with nearly 100 % sensitivity. Similar trials have been conducted using both MRIs and CTCs. Surface type cancers such as II a and II c can also be detected with CTC, however, diagnostic accuracy is still inadequate. For CT and MRI screening to become popular, improvements in image resolution suitable for the detection of surface cancers, as well as improved image display methods, and CAD technology are necessary. Shortening the time required for image analysis, by means of image display methods and computer assistance, as well as alleviating patient burdens during preparation are also steps toward widespread acceptance of this technology.
