[ Summary ] In Japan, secondary examining methods for mass screening to detect colorectal cancer have mainly consisted of colonoscopy and / or barium enema. Recently, in line with developments in colonoscopy, colonoscopy has been greatly recommended because barium enema is considered to be inferior in terms of accuracy in detecting colorectal cancers compared to colonoscopy.
However, in our study, considering meticulous barium examinations, there was not a significant difference between barium enema and colonoscopy in the detection of early colorectal cancer. The main causes of oversights were misjudgments of radiographic films, overlapping of the colon loop and bending, as well as insufficient barium coating of the mucosa.
Therefore, barium enema, which is examined to avoid the former causes and interpreted the radiographic films meticulously such as group checkups, appeared to be a useful examination for application to colorectal cancer screening examinations.
