[ Summary ] It is believed that oxidative stress or free radical reactions are carcinogenis agents. Therefore, antioxidants have long been thought to be chemopreventative agents for cancer treatment. Epidemiologic studies, have suggested that high intake of fruit and vegetables which are rich in antioxidants has cancer chemopreventative effects. However, there are few reports which confirm the cancer chemoprevention effects of antioxidants in human clinical trials. Recently, it has been reported that some antioxidant materials have shown prooxidative effects.
In this report, we provide an outline concerning the cancer chemopreventative properties of antioxidant materials.
