[ Summary ] Mortality rates in Japan for severe acute pancreatitis were extremely high as much as 30 % in the 1990s. However, mortality rates have been reduced to below 10 % for severe acute pancreatitis. New criteria for assessment of severity were developed in 2008. The new Japanese criteria is based on nine prognostic factors for clinical signs and laboratory data, as well as CT grade based on contrast-enhanced CT. Severe acute pancreatitis can be detected by either prognostic factors or CT grade. New criteria would be useful in management of acute pancreatitis.
