[ Summary ] Bacterial infection of the esophagus is rarely encountered in clinical practice. The esophagus has unique defense mechanisms against various kinds of pathogens due to its anatomical and physiological characteristics. Helicobacter pylori colonies are found only in the gastric mucosa and influence gastric acid secretion through several mechanisms. Therefore, Helicobacter pylori infection significantly correlates with several acid related esophageal diseases, such as gastro-esophageal reflux disease, Barrett's esophagus and Barrett's cancer.
