[ Summary ] |
When providing medical care for gastrointestinal diseases in the elderly, it is necessary to pay attention to particular characteristics. The elderly characteristically have reduced or abnormal gastrointestinal functions and atherosclerosis associated diseases due to aging, reflux esophagitis, colon diverticula, and ischemic bowel disease. In regard to peptic ulcers, gastric ulcers are more prevalent than duodenal ulcers in the elderly. In addition, the elderly often develop malignant diseases. Detection rates for gastric cancer and colorectal cancer gradually increase from middle age till 75 - 79 years old and 80 years or older, respectively, and it is necessary to investigate the significance of cancer mass screening for the elderly. Endoscopic examinations are indispensable for diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal disease. In particular, the elderly are likely to suffer from aspiration pneumonia, and it is necessary to pay close attention to the safety of endoscopic examinations and treatment. |
