[ Summary ] The similar histological fearutes and natural histories of alcoholic and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (ASH and NASH) suggest that common pathogenic mechanisms may be involoved in these two conditions. Understanding the cytokine network involved in the pathogenesis of ASH should contribute to elucidating the pathogenesis of NASH. On the other hand, insulin resistance represents the most reproducible predisposing factor for NASH, and NASH has been appropriately considered to be one of the components of the metabolic syndrome, based on abdominal obesity. This suggests that adipocytokines secreted from adipose tissue may play a significant role in the development of NASH.
In this review, we focus on the role of cytokines, especially related to ASH or metabolic syndrome, in the pathogenesis of NASH.
