[ Summary ] The utility of special staining and immuno-staining for routine histological examinations of digestive organ tumors (DOTs) is reviewed. A general knowledge of various types of DOTs (classification) and the meanings of each special or immuno-staining are also examined. The actual classification of DOTs, the principles and techniques of staining, and the lists of antibodies were omitted, due to lack of space. Problems (such as presence or absence of tumors, differential diagnoses, searches of primary sites, low grade or high grade malignancy of tumors etc.) which may be encountered in routine examinations and may help solve the question of which staining mode to use. The usefulness of special and / or immuno-staining in solving problems, is illustrated by showing several practical cases along with practical solutions for the above problems.
