[ Summary ] A 69 year old male died of fulminant hepatitis E in Kitami, Hokkaido. By conducting a family study, it was revealed that seven relatives of the patient were infected with HEV at a Yakiniku restaurant. Pig liver was determined to be the source of infection. To our surprise, a 64-year-old male was infected with HEV through a transfusion from a son of the patient who was infected with HEV at the restaurant. The HEV-RNA sequence of the two corresponded. This is the first report determining the source of HEV infection as being a restaurant.
