[ Summary ] Hepatitis A, which accounts for about 40 % of all hepatitis cases, is the leading cause of acute viral hepatitis in Japan, followed by hepatitis B, non-ABC hepatitis, and hepatitis C. A survey on acute hepatitis by the national hospital study group indicated that hepatitis B and C associated with medical practices, such as blood transfusion, have been controlled. On the other hand, hepatitis A and E, which are transmitted by fecal-oral modes, and hepatitis B, which is associated in sexual transmission, should be paid increased attention.
The number of cases of domestically acquired hepatitis E has been increasing therefore, caution must be taken, especially in the northern parts of Japan, where domestic hepatitis E is endemic. An association of genotype 4 strains and severity of hepatitis has been suggested.
