[ Summary ] Magnifying endoscopy of the gastric mucosa has been improved with the observation of microvascular systems in the mucosa. Magnified views of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-negative normal gastric mucosa, H. pylori-induced gastritis and gastric cancer have been investigated and reported on. The observation of collecting venules, true capillaries and gastric pits has been used for magnifying endoscopic diagnosis of H. pylori-negative normal gastric mucosa and H. pylori-induced gastritis. The differences between microvascular systems in non-cancerous mucosa and in gastric cancer have been used for the diagnosis of gastric cancer. Furthermore, acetic acid whitening and narrow band imaging have been reported to be used for diagnosis of gastric cancer.
