[ Summary ] The results of randomized controlled trials in the United States changed the standards for non-surgical management of esophageal cancer. Definitive chemoradiotherapy or preoperative chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery have been investigated, but results have reached a plateau. In Japan, long term toxicities after definitive chemoradiotherapy have emerged as a problem to be resolved. New treatment strategies, including new drugs, salvage surgery, and advanced radiotherapy techniques should be further investigated to improve survival rates for patients with esophageal cancer.
