[ Summary ] Concurrent chemoradiotherapy has been considered to be the standard treatment for unresectible advanced cancers. In the digestive organs, chemoradiotherapy was the standard modality for squamous cell carcinomas in the esophagus and the anus but, not for adenocarcinoma in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract because chemotherapy is still the standard for the latter.
Because of the higher loco-regional control rates with chemoradiotherapy, neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy has become widely employed in GI tract treatment. On the other hand, the effectiveness of chemoradiotherapy for pancreatic cancer has been reported, especially in parenchymal organ treatment.
However, determining an appropriate combination of total radiation dosage, chemotherapeutic agents and administration for chemoradiotherapy is one of the challenges presently faced.
