[ Summary ] Intraductal papillary-mucinous neoplasms (IPMN) are characterized by features such as ductal dilatation, papillary growths and various grades of atypia in the neoplastic cells. It is important to assess the range and degree of ductal dilatation for proper diagnosis. Recently, a classification scheme for subtypes of IPMN has been proposed to help us understand variations and for better clinical management. Invasive carcinoma may be associated with IPMN. Invasive carcinomas can be classified as mucinous adenocarcinomas or ductal adenocarcinomas, the former of which has a better prognosis than the latter. IPMN must be distinguished from mucinous cystic neoplasms or pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia.
