[ Summary ] PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) is not a goal but only starting point for better nutritional therapy. During long term follow up, many trouble and accidents are seen related to PEG catheters.
Typical problems are leakage, skin trouble, catheter trouble, aspiration pneumonia due to gastro-esophageal reflux, gastrointestinal troubles (diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, ulceration, abdominal fullness), deficiencies of trace elements, hyperglycemia, hyponatremia, and others.
PEG care givers must acquire the techniques for solving associated problems. We hope to support and cooperate with patients, and their families, for a better PEG related life.
