| [ Summary ] | On the basis of WHO classifications, gastric carcinoid tumors are classified as well differentiated endocrine carcinomas. With regard to clinical treatment, the classification by Rindi et al. has been widely accepted, and is subclassified into three types ; Type I (in association with type A gastritis), Type II (in association with multiple neuroendocrine type 1 neoplasia or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome), and Type III (sporadic). Because each type has a different histogensis and biological behavior, a different clinical treatment has been recommended for each. The incidence of gastric carcinoid tumors has recently increased and new types have been reported. Further analysis, including genetic events, is required to establish more subjective and useful classification and strategies for treatment. | |
