[ Summary ] Considering the rapidly growing popularity of illumination using light emitting diodes (hereinafter referred to as “LED”), this article explores the possibility of applications for LED illumination in GI endoscopic systems. Before practical application is possible, there are still some problems to be solved associated with light volume, color rendition and heat elimination. However, the practical use of LEDs is clearly anticipated because of rapid technological progress, which will increase the efficiency and light volume of LEDs, and the optimization of all endoscopic systems by capitalizing on LEDs' strengths. Furthermore, if LEDs can generate light at specific wavelengths, utilized in special light observation technologies, they will also be applicable to special observations. Meanwhile, considering the differences in quality and characteristics of LEDs, it is unlikely that all existing endoscopic systems will be switched from conventional xenon lamps to LEDs immediately. Instead, both systems are expected to coexist for some time.
