[ Summary ] Anisakiasis, is caused by the larva of the nematode genus Anisakis, parasites of marine mammals. It occurs a few hours after consumption of raw or uncooked seafood.
The larvae invade the gastrointestinal mucosa of humans, most often in the stomach. Symptoms are acute onset abdominal pain, nausea and extreme vomiting, much like acute appendicitis or other acute abdominal complaints. Therefore, we recommend inquiring into the episode in detail. Suspicious cases may need endoscopy, then we will be able to possibly diagnose as them gastric anisakiasis and possibly remove the worm at the same time.
In addition, more severe case of Anisakiasis that occur in the ileum and require surgical intervention.
