[ Summary ] Precise diagnosis and hemostatic procedures are important for bleeding esophago-gastric varices during emergency endoscopy for cirrhotic patients. Endoscopic injection sclerotherapy (EIS) and endoscopic variceal ligation (EVL) are effective procedures for bleeding esophageal varices. Furthermore, it is widely accepted that injection of a tissue adhesive (Histoacryl) should be the first choice procedure for bleeding gastric varices.
Endoscopic hemostatic procedures should be immediately performed for spurting bleeding, oozing bleeding, red or white plugs or tiny erosions on the varices during emergency endoscopy. Not only should hemostatic procedures but also supportive care should be performed for this population.
