| [ Summary ] | Passage disorders are largely divided into the categories of functional disorders and mechanical disorders. Many diseases which require emergent gastrointestinal endoscopy are mechanical disorders. Related conditions are esophageal cancer, thyroid cancer obstructions, metastatic lymph nodes, foreign bodies in the esophagus, reflux esophagitis scars, anastomotic strictures, scars from chemoradiotherapy and scars from EMR. Generally, emergent endoscopy is indicated for patients whose strictures are filled with food. The most frequent condition is foreign bodies in the esophagus. The purpose of emergent endoscopy is the diagnosis of the causes of obstructions and, if possible, removal of them. In removal of esophageal foreign bodies, aortic penetration and mediastinitis should be avoided. | |
