[ Summary ] Oxidative stress (OS) is suspected as an important pathophysiological mechanism in non alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Anti-OS therapies in NASH and chronic hepatitis C (CH-C) are introduced.
The primary treatment for NASH is weight reduction but the difficult point is maintaining ongoing weight loss. Trials of anti-OS therapies using vitamins E and C are reported to suppress liver injury and hepatic fibrosis in NASH. In CH-C, with no response to anti-viral treatment, anti-OS therapy as well as anti-inflammatory treatments have been tried to treat the progression to cirrhosis and development of hepatocellular carcinoma.
