[ Summary ] Oxygen is the key molecule for energy transduction in aerobic organisms. Under physiological conditions, small fractions of the inspired oxygen are converted to reactive oxygen species including superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radicals and nitric oxide (NO).
Because these species rapidly interact with various molecules, they have been postulated to play critical roles in the regulation of metabolism, defense mechanisms against pathogens and in the pathogenesis of a wide variety of inflammatory and degenerative diseases.
