[ Summary ] Inflammatory bowel diseases, especially, Crohn's disease (CD) have many complications, of which bowel stenosis is the most serious complication because it is the main reason for surgery for CD. Because recurrence after surgery is common, a non-surgical treatment modality is required for bowel stenosis. Endoscopic balloon dilation (EBD) is one useful method for bowel obstructions because technical methods may be used when indicated for rather short stenosis without fistula or without deep ulcerations. Long term surgery avoidance rates were 92 % at a year and 77 % at three years. Upper gastrointestinal strictures with CD were safely dialated as well. From these results, EBD may be considered as one of the most important modalities for treatment among the therapeutic strategies for CD.
