| [ Summary ] | Preoperative staging of gastric cancer by endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is becoming increasingly important. Many studies have demonstrated the superior sensitivity of EUS over CT for preoperative TN staging of gastric cancer. A high frequency ultrasound catheter probe is most useful for determining the depth of invasion when the tumor is histologically differentiated and endoscopically of the small elevated type of early gastric cancer. Results of the recent prospective blind study showed no statistically significant differences between endoscopy and EUS in the overall accuracy rates in staging of the invasion depth. EUS is a highly sensitive and specific procedure for diagnosing intramural changes (depth of invasion and ulcerative changes) crucial for the indication of endoscopic mucosal resection. However, it is unreliable in nodal staging for early gastric cancer. | |
